Recommendations For Binge Watchers

With lots of free time on our hands and nowhere to go, we can now binge watch our favorite movies and TV shows without having to feel guilty about wasting time! Here's a list of a few binge-worthy films and series for kids and adults:

VIRUS OUTBREAK MOVIES & SERIES

Contagion

A global action thriller that revolves around the threat of a deadly outbreak of a fatal disease and the people determined to keep it at bay. As the fast-moving epidemic grows, the worldwide medical community races to find a cure and control the panic that spreads faster than the virus itself. At the same time, ordinary people struggle to survive in a society coming apart. Dedicated doctors at the CDC and World Health Organization rush to contain the outbreak of a new virus.

Outbreak

A handful of scientists struggle to prevent the destruction of a small town, and possibly the entire country, in this suspense drama. In the mid-1960s, a deadly virus is discovered in Zaire that wipes out an entire village in 24 hours. Government researchers are brought in to investigate, but the military opts to destroy the village rather than risk further infection. Thirty years later, an expert on contagious diseases, is called in when the virus re-emerges in Africa.

Pandemic - How To Prevent An Outbreak

A 2020 American documentary series about pandemics. The series covers a range of issues relating to pandemics, such as the possibility of an influenza pandemic and research on achieving a universal vaccine, to emerging viruses, anti-vaxxers, and the Ebola virus disease outbreak in Africa. The series features Health and Science Officers, including Syra Madad, Ronald Klain, Raghu Sharma, and Michel Yao. The documentary questions our readiness for fast-moving viruses like Coronavirus.

93 Days

93 Days is the film you want to watch. It's based on the true story of 2014 Ebola outbreak in Nigeria, and focuses specifically on Dr. Ameyo Adadevoh, a key figure in helping to contain the virus. It focuses on the city of Lagos, which has a population of over 21 million people. When the Ebola virus started spreading into the city, doctors, government officials and healthcare workers had to make extremely difficult decisions under an extremely dangerous backdrop to help save millions of lives. It isn't a documentary, but it does do it's best to present the real story of how the Ebola virus was contained.

FEEL GOOD MOVIES & SERIES

The Intern

Seventy-year-old widower Ben Whittaker has discovered that retirement isn't all it's cracked up to be. Seizing an opportunity to get back in the game, he becomes a senior intern at an online fashion site, founded and run by Jules Ostin. Written and produced by Nancy Meyers. The film stars Robert De Niro, Anne Hathaway, and Rene Russo, with supporting performances from Anders Holm, Andrew Rannells, Adam DeVine, and Zack Pearlman. The film may leave you in tears but it is definitely worth it!

The Pursuit Of Happyness

Will Smith stars alongside his son, Jaden, in this happy yet emotional movie. Chris Gardener (Will Smith) might be a genius, but no one seems to recognize it yet. He’s struggling to sell medical supplies when he and his son are evicted from their San Francisco apartment. He lands an internship at a stock brokerage firm but discovers it’s unpaid, and he must decide how to care for his child while getting his foot in the door.

Friends

A 90's Comedy TV show, based in Manhattan, about 6 friends who go through just about every life experience imaginable together; love, marriage, divorce, children, heartbreaks, fights, new jobs and job losses and all sorts of drama.

Ratatouille

A rat named Remy who can cook makes an unusual alliance with a young kitchen worker at a famous restaurant. Remy dreams of becoming a great French chef despite his family's wishes and the obvious problem of being a rat in a decidedly rodent-phobic profession. When fate places Remy in the sewers of Paris, he finds himself ideally situated beneath a restaurant made famous by his culinary hero, Auguste Gusteau. Despite the apparent dangers of being an unlikely, and certainly unwanted, visitor in the kitchen of a fine French restaurant, Remy's passion for cooking soon sets into motion a hilarious and exciting rat race that turns the culinary world of Paris upside down.

Klaus

A simple act of kindness always sparks another, even in a frozen, faraway place. When Smeerensburg's new postman, Jesper, befriends toy maker Klaus, their gifts melt an age-old feud and deliver a sleigh full of holiday traditions. The beautiful hand-drawn animation and a humorous, heartwarming narrative make Klaus an instant candidate to lighten up your spirits during quarantine!

Inside Out

Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it’s no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness. The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley’s main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.

A 78-year-old curmudgeonly balloon salesman, is not your average hero. When he ties thousands of balloons to his house and flies away to the wilds of South America, he finally fulfills his lifelong dream of adventure. But after Carl discovers an 8-year-old stowaway named Russell, this unlikely duo soon finds themselves on a hilarious journey in a lost world filled with danger and surprises.

FOR THE KIDS

Matilda

This film adaptation of a Roald Dahl work tells the story of Matilda Wormwood, a gifted girl forced to put up with a crude, distant father and mother. Worse, Agatha Trunchbull, the evil principal at Matilda's school, is a terrifyingly strict bully. However, when Matilda realizes she has the power of telekinesis, she begins to defend her friends from the principal's wrath and fight back against her unkind parents.

Mrs. Doubtfire

Troubled that he has little access to his children, divorced Daniel Hillard hatches an elaborate plan. With help from his creative brother Frank, he dresses as an older British woman and convinces his ex-wife, Miranda, to hire him as a nanny. "Mrs. Doubtfire" wins over the children and helps Daniel become a better parent -- but when both Daniel and his nanny persona must meet different parties at the same restaurant, his secrets may be exposed.
